

There have been windmills in Lincolnshire for over 500 years and there are at least 20 working mills, open to the public, in this part of the country. The Lincolnshire Cross is peculiar to this area and allows mills to have any number of sails. Nearby mills include;
Alford, The Five-sailed Windmill. Built in 1837 by Sam Oxley, Alford boasts one of England’s finest working windmills it also has this area’s distinctive ogee (onion shaped) top. The grain is used to produce delicious cakes in the tea room and the flour is available from their wholefood shop.

Waltham Windmill north of Louth was built in 1879 by Sandersons of Louth, this is a six sailed Tower Mill Their museum of Rural life is also well worth a visit, there is a restaurant, herb shop, crafts and more.
